Catnip
Catnip - Napeta cataria
When most people think of Catip they think of the stuffed toys you pick up that make your cats go crazy. And while the catnip I want to talk to you about today is in fact what’s in those toys, it is so much much more!
Catnip has qualities that are euphoric for cats. Simply put, you may find a kitty nibbling, chewing and rolling around in catnip feeling intensely excited and happy often followed by a long, lovely nap. Not all cats react this way, but it is quite common.
Relief from Digestive Issues
Catnip has been traditionally used to soothe various digestive problems such as indigestion, gas, bloating, and stomach cramps. It contains compounds that help relax the muscles of the digestive tract, easing discomfort. If you or someone you know gets indigestion or an upset tummy from stress this herb could be a good remedy.
Calming Properties
We humans don’t react this way to catnip. Catnip is a gentle yet very effective herb that is soothing and settling to our nervous system. Catnip’s mild sedative effects can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and nervousness.
Catnip has been used topically to relieve minor aches, pains and prevent spasms.
For Littles
Considered a very safe and mild herb it is an excellent herb to use with babies and children especially for teething, agitation, colic, an upset tummy or colds. Catnip isn’t very palatable on its own. A tea mixed with a little apple juice to drink or freeze for popsicles should make a tasty soothing treat. If dealing with a cold, the cooling and drying constitutes may help dry up mucus in the upper respiratory tract.
Insect Repellent
Catnip contains a compound called nepetalactone, which is known to repel mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, and other insects. It can be used in the form of essential oil or as a crushed herb to deter pests.
How to Use
Teas blends with catnip as well as a tincture are the most common way to use this herb. When making tea, adding herbs like chamomile, passionflower and lemon balm can bring added calming benefits as well is improve its flavor.
