Passion Flower
Passiflora incarnata - Passion Flower a.k.a. Maypops, Purple & Passion Vine
Passion Flower is a fast-growing perennial vine with climbing or trailing stems most notably known for its nervine and sedative properties.
Do you have childhood memories of the Maypop? I sure do! How amazing it was to discover this childhood plant toy was such a blessing from the Lord!
It gets its name from its corona (or crown-like) structures between the petals and stamens in the center of the flower blossom. Historically it was believed to resemble the Crown of Thorns given to Jesus of Nazareth. Passionflower became the symbol of the crucifixion during the early seventeenth century. How awesome is that!!?!
Natural Stress Reliever
Passion Flower contains compounds like flavonoids and alkaloids that are calming and soothing to the nervous system, promoting a calming effect that may alleviate stress and anxiety without side effects of depression or disorientation.
Considered by some, an herb to add to other cardio herbs to help with stress induced hypertension (high blood pressure.) In the same line, anxiety driven lung issues and increased heart rate and breathing may be supported by using Passionflower.
Sleep
Passionflower is often added to tea blends and tinctures to aid in a sleep. The calming effect can not only helps induce sleep but also improves overall sleep quality especially when muscle twitching, aches or pains are the culprit.
Ladies
Edginess from hormone fluctuations in women may be eased with the use of Passionflower.
And while on the subject of more personal matters, Passionflower may be good for low libido for individuals who are too stressed to enjoy anything.
Use for Children
Passionflower can be used for irritability, nervousness and twitching in children. Added to other gentle herbs like chamomile, catnip, and lemon balm to make a tea can support the nervous system and the aggravation and pain of teething.
Colic
Nursing Mamas can drink the tea mentioned above before nursing to sooth and support their baby.
Teas blends with Passionflower and Tinctures (often combined with other nervine herbs) are the most common way to incorporate passionflower into your wellness journey.
I can’t help but stand in awe when I think about Passionflower. It’s like everything about it points us to our Lord and Savior. From its appearance to its properties. It has been given to us to delight in as a child, to restore our minds and bodies when the weight of the world has wound us too tight, taken our peace, our rest and fullness of joy. Wow! What a Savior!
Until next time - blessings and wholeness to you and yours, JeriAnne
