Wonderful Herbs Growing in Yards Each Spring!

Have you noticed these plants growing everywhere right now? Well at least here in the south they currently can be found. Did you know these “weeds” are actually medicinal herbs?

Henbit with its round leaf patterns and purple little flowers popping upwards is an overlooked herb that contains various vitamins and minerals, including:

1. Vitamin A

2. Vitamin C

3. Vitamin K

4. Calcium

5. Iron

6. Magnesium

7. Potassium

8. Phosphorus

It has anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve chronic pain, soreness and stiffness.

Add it to salads for a nutritious boost or brew it into a tea. This week I combined it with peppermint and lemon balm for a cup of tea.

Sometimes Henbit and Purple Dead Nettle get confused with one another.

Purple Dead Nettle too is adorned with purple flowers but as you can see in these images not only are the flowers pinkish purple but the top leaves also have hues of pink and purple.

The most notable difference though is the leaves. Dead Nettle has heart shaped leaves and square stems, much like Catnip and others in the mint family.

Dead Nettle contains:

  1. Vitamin C, A & K

  2. Iron

  3. Calcium

  4. Magnesium

  5. Fiber

  6. Antioxidants

  7. anti- histamines

  8. anti inflammatory properties

  9. bioflavonoids

It can be helpful for seasonal allergies. Isn’t it amazing that the Lord gave us this planting coming up at the first of spring to help with allergies?!?

Dead nettle can be used as a poultice to be placed on a wound for its   properties and  to stop bleeding.

Dead nettle can be added to salads, smoothies, and even made into a pesto.

Both herbs can be used fresh or dried for later use.

🙌God’s Goodness at your fingertips!

⭐️ Always be mindful of where you harvest wild herbs from. Roadsides and under and around power lines are areas that are regularly sprayed with herbicides.  Until next time, blessings and wholeness to you and yours!
